Karen is a full time adaptive rower in Belfast. After a successful start with the GB wheelchair basketball team (2005-06) Karen was identified by the GB Adaptive Rowing team and transferred into the sport in 2006.

Karen had immediate success with a top 6 finish at the 2006 World Championships. Karen qualified for the Paralympics in Beijing and finished in 5th place.

In 2009 Karen transferred from team GB to the Irish squad.

In April 2010 Karen joined the Irish LTA (leg, trunk and arms) mixed coxed four team and in the same month won won two silver medals at the International Adaptive Regatta in the Italian city of Varese.
