MCCANN WINS FINAL STAGE AND TAKES VICTORY IN TOUR OF PHILIPPINES

26 April 2010

At the end of a tough 119 kilometre stage based around Subic, the 37 year old Belfast competitor outsprinted breakaway companion Sascha Damrow (CCN Sportswear-Colossi) to the line. Suzuki Yuzuru (Shimano Racing) and Allen Travis (DCM Team) were the nearest chasers, losing one minute and 50 seconds, and the rest of the field were even further back.

McCann finished the four day race a staggering six minutes and 45 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Lloyd Lucien Reynante (7-Eleven Racing Team). Baler Ravina (Batang Tagaytay) was two seconds further behind.

The Irishman’s dominance was further emphasised by his win in the points classification and also the mountains competition, thus ensuring he took all the major jerseys in the race. He sealed victory in the latter contest when he was first to the top of today’s second climb, the category two ascent of Kademan.

Last month McCann won the opening stage of the Tour of Taiwan and defended his lead until the end. His performance in the Philippines has been even more convincing, with the Giant Asia rider nabbing two stage wins out of the four stages held, and never looking under any serious threat.
