Connor who turned professional this year has been racing on the UCI circuit and will miss the Tour of Britain, the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games. The Belfast born cyclist will now focus on his recovery ahead of the new season in late January and had this to say about the decision,
“This is a massive blow to me, the opportunities I am now missing are huge so I can’t stress enough how I gutted I am, the races I am missing are what I have been working towards all season.
This is my first full year in the pro road circuit and I have enjoyed it immensely and made the transition from mountain biking to the road well and have exceeded the expectations of my team.
The team have managed my season really well and have at all times ensured that I have the right mix of training and competition and have always had my interests as a priority.
However, my training load and competition schedule has tripled and despite trying my best to overcome the fatigue, I have been advised by my medical team to end my season now. I am really disappointed, but my team, Sports Institute Northern Ireland and myself have exhausted every avenue to try and offset these symptoms, regrettably the fatigue has been too strong.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team and the Commonwealth Games team for all their support and encouragement and I wish them both well for the remainder of the season.
My priority is now to focus on recovery ahead of winter training.”
