McConvey prepares for the biggest race of his year

03 September 2009

Connor took some time out this week and spoke to www.sini.co.uk to give us the inside track into on this massive event.

Connor McConvey

How excited are you to be competing at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, Canberra, Australia, CM?

Well this event is the highlight of the year for me. This is the race that I have been working towards all season; there has been a huge amount of preparation, so that does increase the level of anxiety!

I don’t know if I would say excited about the race, I am definitely excited to be going into a World Championship with a real chance of a result.

How important is this event in your calendar?

This is the biggest race of the year and I feel that I have really matured this season, this is the first World Championship that I have gone into feeling confident in myself and knowing that I've put my all on the line for this.

What are your expectations for this event?

Well, there are two guys who will definitely ride away from the rest of the field. Then there is a group of eight of us who are all at a very similar level. After that you have everyone else who has prepared specifically for this race.

If everything goes perfectly in my race then I hope that a top 10 finish is on the cards.

How do you get ready for a race?

This race is no different than the rest in terms of preparation. The only thing is that I have tapered my training for this race instead of training right up to it like the previous races I have eased off before the race.

Since I have arrived in Canberra it has been about rest, recovery, getting over the travel, and staying sharp.

Then, from about 48hours before the race every minute of preparation is exactly the same as every other race, that involves some time at the course, a lot of rest, an early ride the morning of the race; then up to the race for warm up, testing, call up, & race.

Your SINI physio Chris McNicholl travelled over to Australia to support you this week, how important is it for you to have that support?

It’s great to have the support of the physio who treats me week in week out at home. It means that nothing is changing for me at my biggest race of the year. It is excellent for me to have that support network of vital services on the road.

Good Luck Connor from everyone at SINI!
