Maybin finishes five behind in SA

SINI golfer Gareth Maybin, who hails from Ballyclare, finished five shots behind winner Pablo Martin at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.

Maybin carded a final round of one-under-par 71, which included four birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey, to tie for fourth place on 12 under par.

While fellow SINI athlete Michael Hoey shot a 74 to end one under.

Three off the lead going into Sunday's play, Maybin began his final round strongly with birdies at the second and sixth holes, but suffered a setback with a bogey at the 13th.

Birdies followed at the 15th and 17th but a double-bogey at the 18th put pay to any hopes of winning the tournament.

Hoey recorded three birdies, a bogey and two double-bogeys in his closing 18 holes.

Massaro defeats Perry in Monaco

SINI squash star Madeline Perry fell to an agonising 3-2 defeat against top seed Laura Massaro in Friday's Monte Carlo Classic final.

The second seed from Banbridge, 32, stormed back from two games down and then let victory slip from her grasp as Preston's Massaro triumphed.

She was 6-1 up in the deciding game but failed to register another point as she lost 5-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-2, 6-11.

"I am bitterly disappointed at the result. I just can't put my finger on what went wrong," said Perry.

"She upped her game a little but I didn't make too many unforced errors in the last game.”

"It was especially disappointing after coming back the way I did.”

"I really thought I could have won as I played very well after losing the first two games.”

Perry will return home next week to defend her Irish Open title in Dublin.

Top 10 for Martyn Irvine

SINI athlete Martyn Irvine was part of the Irish track team who completed its campaign at round three of cycling’s World Cup in Cali, Columbia

Matt Brammeier, Marcus Christie, Martyn Irvine and David O’Loughlin were sixth out of 13 squads in the men’s team pursuit, which was won by Columbia, while Martyn was 15th in the 1000m time trial, just over four second behind French leader D’almeida.

Nocher ninth in 200m final

SINI athlete Melanie Nocher finished ninth in the final of 200 metre backstroke at European Swimming Championships in Istanbul.

The 21-year-old posted a time of 2:06.07 in the 10-swimmer final which was over half a second outside her own Irish record which she set when finishing fifth in the final of the same event in Croatia last year.

Nocher was faster in her morning heat where she qualified in seventh overall and her finishing time in the final was four seconds slower than Alexianne Castel of France who took the gold medal with silver going to Jenny Mensing of Germany. Pernille Larsen of Denmark took bronze.
