SINI athlete Gareth Maybin off to US Open

25 May 2010

Maybin looked unlikely to qualify after a 71 at Walton Heath's New Course but his afternoon 65 at the Old Course earned him one of the 11 spots.

Maybin will be contesting his first Major championship and he could not have been happier, particularly after the disappointment last July of being the first reserve into the British Open and having to wait all day at Turnberry for no player to withdraw.

He said: “I played poorly this morning, but I changed my driver for the second round, and it seemed to do the job. It was one of my better decisions on a golf course. One of my goals at the start of the season was to get into a Major, so I’m pretty pleased I managed to accomplish it.”

"I adjusted the shaft in my driver between rounds and I drove it a bit better but not much.

"I just managed to score a whole lot better and holed a few putts."

Gareth is supported through the Sports Institute Northern Ireland and has received support from Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition, Physiology, Physiotherapy as well as Performance Planning.
