SINI athlete Paddy Barnes made history in June when he became the first Northern Irish man to win Gold at the European Amateur Championships in Moscow, his medal glory is made all the more impressive by the fact that just 2 months before he took Gold Paddy had a hernia operation.

SINI physio Chris McNicholl tests European Gold Medalist Paddy Barnes core strength on the RedCord Physio equipment during a regular physio session at the Sports Institute Northern Ireland.
Paddy is a Sports Institute Northern Ireland (SINI) athlete and SINI planned and supported him throughout his operation and rehab period with Chris McNicholl’s SINI physio saying this about Paddy’s incredible recovery,
“Paddy has said this was the biggest win of his career and when you consider that he had a hernia operation just eight weeks before his first fight, it really is amazing. After confirming the diagnosis of a hernia SINI moved quickly in conjunction with Irish Boxing to organise minimally invasive surgery with a top surgeon in England.
We met Paddy at SINI four days post op to assess him and whilst he was very stiff and sore everything had gone very well and after consulting Paddy’s surgeon and Johnson McEvoy, Head Physio with Irish Boxing, we knew we had a chance of getting him ready for Russia if we all worked very hard and most importantly of all, together.
Paddy received intensive Physiotherapy and rehabilitation at SINI and two weeks post operation Paddy was running and involved in agility drills. At three weeks post operation Paddy was sprinting, engaged in modified wrestling, plus intensive abdominal and hip strengthening. After three weeks we concentrated on his end stage boxing specific rehab.
Most important of all was the complete professionalism and dedication of Paddy who carried out his programme without question. His approach and competitiveness is infectious and made this block of work for us very easy and enjoyable.”
Man of the moment Paddy Barnes had this to say,
“ SINI really helped me get ready to fight in a very short space of time, to be honest I had hoped to be back but I never thought I would be back in such top condition in such a short period of time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team at SINI for all the work they put in.”
