Congratulations to Sycerika McMahon who produced a series of outstanding performances at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, winning a total of five medals.

The Leander swimmer’s first Gold, and indeed Northern Ireland’s first medal of the Games, came in the 100m Breast stroke on Friday, where she won in a new Irish Senior record time of 1:07.93. She followed this up later with another record-breaking race in the 800m Freestyle final, setting a new Irish Junior record time of 8:41.10.
Saturday evening saw Sycerika clinch another pair of medals, with two more record times. In the 200m Individual Medley she won Silver in a time of 2:13.27, an Irish Junior and Ulster Senior record. She followed this up with a second Gold medal in the 50m Breast Stroke, setting another Irish Senior record time of 31.47.
As the weekend’s races drew to a close on Sunday, Sycerika showed no signs of stopping her impressive run of results, and added yet another pair of medals to her tally, winning Gold in the 400m Individual Medley and Silver in the 200m Freestyle.
In total, 16 year-old McMahon took three Gold and two Silver medals during the Games, and took Northern Ireland’s total medal haul to eight, placing them 10th in the overall medal table.
Congratulations to Sycerika and the Northern Ireland Team.
