Wrestler Mark Montgomery takes Bronze

24 May 2010

The former judo star who trains out of the Sport NI PDC in Lisburn had set off with a target of a top 3 British finish or a top 6 finish overall. Mark beat a Welshman, and an Iranian then lost in Semi Final to the world number 8. Mark then beat an Englishman for the bronze.

In summary Mark beat both targets with a top 3 finish and a top 2 British finish and this is the first medal a Northern Ireland wrestler has won at these champs for 16 years. Mark was confirmed last week as one of the first members to be selected for the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games team for the Delhi games later this year.

Mark had this to say after the event,

"I'm really delighted with my result and to be able to bring home a bronze medal for Northern Ireland. This competition is the first of five over the next five weeks so my focus now turns to the 'Sassari Cup' in Sardinia this week. I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me in the run up to this event."
