Some other key roles provided by the sports physician in SINI are –

PRE-PARTICIPATION SCREENING

All our athletes undergo a thorough medical assessment. This focuses on a family or personal history of medical issues / illness and a thorough clinical examination . The aim of the evaluation is to ensure that our athletes are safe to participate at the elite level in their respective sport. Further clinical tests (bloods, urine tests, cardiac screening, respiratory tests, xrays etc) are organised as indicated.

ILLNESS PREVENTION

Our sports physician is available to advise and educate athletes on all aspects of illness prevention in elite sport including the provision of immunisation and advice regarding foreign travel and competing abroad.

MANAGEMENT OF ILLNESS

Illness can devastate an athlete’s season. Prompt management is essential and our sports physician is ideally placed to provide diagnosis and treatment. This will include advice regarding the safe re-introduction of training and competition following recovery from illness.

ASSESSMENT OF INJURY

Our sports physician is experienced in the assessment of musculo-skeletal injuries and works closely with his physiotherapy colleagues in the diagnosis of injury. He is also trained in the use of diagnostic ultrasound and provides this service on-site in SINI.

INJURY MANAGEMENT

Within SINI we aim to provide evidence based effective treatment strategies. Amongst the interventions provided by our sports physician are a wide variety of injections (including ultrasound guided injections) and the use of shockwave therapy.

ANTI-DOPING

The sports physician in SINI is available to provide advice to our athletes about all aspects of the anti-doping process.

MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAMWORK

In addition to the above our sports physician works closely with coaches and the rest of his colleagues in the sports medicine, sports science, strength & conditioning, nutrition, performance and lifestyle teams advising on a wide range of medical issues.
